The message in “Cool Hand Luke” can be compared to the escalation from school to college to a full time job. You go to school from kindergarten to grade 12 then are expected to go to college to then pursue a full time job. I want to finish grade 12 and then go travelling to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life. We all need to realize that we can make our own choices after we finish school.
The short story by Graham Greene called The Destructors is a story set right around war times. It is about a gang of boys and a old man and his house. On a street where all the rest of the houses have been destroyed by bombing, there is one house still standing. The boys do not really get along with the owner of the house Mr.Thomas. Mr.Thomas leaves his house for a couple days and one of the boys named Trevor decide that they should destroy his house. The boys all agree and they get to work. Trevor has this plan that instead of just tearing the house down there going to eviscerate the house. The boys get to work on destroying the house inside out. In the end they bring down his house and Mr.Thomas is not happy.
The reason I think the boys decide to eviscerate the house is not out of boredom but I think that the house remind them of the past. The bombing was a hard time for all back then. With Old Misery’s house being the last one standing on a street full of destruction, they felt the need to finish it and start new. They did not want the constant reminder of what was.
Paul’s Case by Willa Cather is a short story about a boy named Paul who wishes he could live in his ideal life instead of his dreary real one. Paul loves going to museums and going to listen and watch the singers and orchestra because he dreams for the lives of them. He thinks that his school, his home and his elders are all bitter and dark. In the end he steals money to live his dream life but ends up killing himself in the process.
I read a lot of books, when I read for long periods of time or when I get really into a book, I almost seem to fade into the book. The descriptions in the book become real to me and my brain takes over and the book makes me want to live in the world described by the author. I feel like this is the same with Paul. He goes to all of these shows, sees the performers after the shows and he realizes that their lives seem all fancy and easy. Paul does not want to become a musician and earn the reward of the luxurious life. He just wants it to be put at his feet for him. It is very unrealistic to achieve things without putting work and effort into it.
The Allegory of the Cave by Plato is a short story that describes a scenario. The narrator describes a scene, there is a cave and inside the cave there are prisoners that are chained so they can only see in front of them. Behind them is a wall and behind the wall there is a fire and puppets. The puppets cast shadows on the wall in front of the prisoners and that’s all they can see. The narrator then goes on to describe what would happen if one of the prisoners was unchained and dragged outside by a man. The prisoner would experience a whole new world and experience different things that he is not used to. If the other prisoners could lay hands on the man letting them free they would kill him.
I think the prisoners would kill him because they don’t want change and they do not like the sound of change. They have grown up in the chains there in and they don’t want to be removed from them. I also think that there scared of what the world may hold. All they know are the puppets and what the puppets say. It’s kind of like me, my mum wants to move in with her new boyfriend but i don’t. I lived in the house I’m in now for more then 10 years and I don’t like thinking about leaving it. So I’m like a prisoner to my house like there a prisoner to the cave.
